New HCPCS Code Approved for NeuroNode in the USA

August 27, 2024

We are thrilled to announce that NeuroNode®, our groundbreaking access solution, has been recognized with its own unique billing identifier code in the USA. This decision reflects the NeuroNode’s importance and versatility in the assistive technology field. This was finalized by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) with a new Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) Level II code.

This milestone is a testament to the NeuroNode’s innovation and impact and marks a significant step forward in expanding access for individuals with complex bodies.

About the new HCPCS code

The newly established HCPCS Level II code is E2513 for “Accessory for speech generating device, electromyographic sensor”. The new code recognizes the unique functionality and benefits of the NeuroNode as an AAC device. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has categorized NeuroNode under the Durable Medical Equipment (DME) benefit, recognizing its role as a critical accessory for speech generating devices.

HCPCS is a standardized coding system used in the USA to process claims for Medicare and other health insurance programs. HCPCS Level II codes are used to represent durable medical equipment, transportation, and some medications. Purchasing is Now easier for users and clinicians

Previously, the NeuroNode fell under code E2599 for “Accessory for speech generating device, not otherwise specified”. This meant if an individual would benefit from both eye gaze and NeuroNode, only one would likely be covered through insurance.

Beginning on October 1, 2024, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will code the NeuroNode as E2513. The dedicated code will enable healthcare providers to accurately report the use of NeuroNode, making it simpler to process claims and enhancing patient access to this revolutionary technology. This will now allow for the direct billing of all the components provided as part of our solutions.

The initiative to establish this new HCPCS code was led by Todd Tyler, President, North America, who says “With this new recognition, we are paving the way for more streamlined billing, broader adoption, and enhanced support for our users. Clients will be able to receive more efficient and predictable funding, removing a significant barrier to access.”

What’s so special about NeuroNode

The NeuroNode is a wireless wearable electromyography (EMG)-based device that interprets even the smallest muscle signals, providing individuals with the ability to control communication devices and other technology with ease. This is especially crucial for individuals with limited motor control, where traditional access methods often fall short.

Unlike other sensors, the NeuroNode uses the body’s EMG signals or 3D spatial awareness to give the user control. Individuals can use NeuroNode to access their computer, phone, tablet, and more. It attaches simply and non-invasively with an adhesive or non-adhesive electrode and NeuroNode band.

The NeuroNode provides non-invasive, EMG-mediated computer access, communication, and environmental control capabilities for individuals with conditions such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), cerebral palsy, spinal muscular atrophy, and certain traumatic brain injuries.

NeuroNode is not just a one-size-fits-all solution.  It can be seamlessly integrated with various AAC devices and communication software making it a versatile option for diverse needs. It is compatible with communication software solutions like Grid 3, MindExpress, Avaz, Predictable and others.  We’ve seen firsthand how therapists and assistive technology specialists have used the NeuroNode to unlock new possibilities for users with different physical and cognitive profiles, tailoring the technology to fit each unique case.
