Adding to the Eye Gaze Knowledge Base: Dwell vs. Switch Selection

Many improvements have been made to eye gaze technology in the approximately 30-years it has been used with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). To name a few, the technology has become smaller but more powerful; cameras can pick-up and track more eyes, even when users wear glasses; and the price has decreased significantly, especially since insurance covers it. Are there more improvements to be made? Yes!

This session will address improvements to one aspect of eye gaze – how the item being looked at is selected. Specifically, we will look at research that compares the accuracy and efficiency of eye gaze with dwell to eye gaze combined with an EMG sensor. Results indicate a significant increase in speed as well as satisfaction by participants.

AAC Implementation in Context: Sibling and SLP

As speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and other professionals, we should be working closely with the family members of our clients who use, or will soon use, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). After all, parents and siblings know the client base and are together a lot. How can we effectively support these family members? What are some things to embrace? To avoid?

This session will present the experiences of Rylee, the sibling of an AAC user who later became an SLP, information from the AAC research-base, and learnings from clinical practice. Join us to learn practical tips and strategies you can use right away.
