Using Eye Gaze for Communication and Learning: A Case Study

Description: How do I teach eye gaze skills to a young child?  Where do we start and what do we do next?  If you have ever asked these questions, this session is for you.  Join us as we discuss the journey of Dulce, a child with Cerebral Palsy, as she learned to use eye gaze as an access method for leisure, education, and communication! In this case study, we will view video interviews with Dulce and her father as well as hear directly from representatives of the eye gaze manufacturer.   You will leave with new ideas and tools based on the successes and challenges faced by Dulce and her team.

Content Disclosure: The child in this case study uses the Hiru eye gaze system from Irisbond.  Because this session focuses on her experience, no other eye gaze systems will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:  As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to:

    1. State at least 2 steps in implementing eye gaze.
    2. Identify 2 challenges and 2 successes experienced by a family using eye gaze for learning, development, and communication.
    3. Describe the implications of implementing at least 3 different tools that can be used in combination with an eye gaze system.

Presenter Bios and Disclosures

Hannah Erickson, Irisbond’s Head of Training & Support, is originally from Minnesota, USA, but has spent much of her career abroad. She graduated with a Psychology degree from the University of Minnesota in 2013 and, after working in her home state in special education, she spent 6 years as a language trainer in Spain coordinating international program exchanges. Now at Irisbond for over 2 years, Hannah is the Head of Training and Support and provides eye gaze product knowledge and support to clients around the world.

Elisabetta Bertola López, Doctor of Speech Therapy, is an AAC Specialist at Irisbond and is a professor at the Antonio de Nebrija University. Born in Spain and holding dual Spanish and Italian nationality, she has been the director of a neurorehabilitation center, a researcher in the field of AAC, a professor at three universities, and has enjoyed working with patients with complex communication challenges. At Irisbond, she collaborates with hospitals in the southern region of Spain, providing training to medical teams on the use of AAC systems, intervening with patients facing communication challenges, and coordinates a team of AAC specialists.

Participant Information

Course Format:  Using Eye Gaze for Communication and Learning:  A Case Study is a self-study, recorded webinar available for viewing after completing a brief registration form.

Target Audience: This session is designed for speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, family members, caregivers, educators, and anyone interested in learning about eye gaze and AAC!

Completion Requirements:  In order to receive a certificate of completion or ASHA CEUs, participants must:

    • View the recorded course.  Partial credit for attending less than the whole class is not allowed.
    • Pass an online exam with 80% accuracy or greater.  Exams are multiple choice with 10 or fewer questions and can be taken as many times as needed to pass.
    • Complete an online course evaluation.

Timeline:  Access to the course, exam, and course evaluation will be provided after registering for this recorded course. Participants have until the end of the month in which they registered to complete the course, exam, and evaluation after registration.  Quiz results and course evaluation responses will be checked within 3 days of the end of each month.  For participants who meet completion requirements during the prior month, ASHA reporting and/or certificates of completion will be sent within 15 days.
