Eye Gaze 101: Getting Started

Description:  Eye gaze as a way to access high tech Augmentative and Alternative Communication devices has come a long way since it was introduced!  It is now available on a variety of communication devices and is generally funded along with the communication device itself.  Just because eye gaze is a more commonly used access method, it doesn’t necessarily mean that clinicians, teachers, and family members feel comfortable using or teaching it.  This course is designed to present the basics about eye gaze technology, who can use it, and how to set it up.   We will use demonstrations and case studies to help you feel more comfortable getting started with eye gaze!

Content Disclosure:  The content of this training is relevant to many different kinds of AAC systems.  Because the presenter works for Control Bionics, all examples will be shown using Control Bionics products.

Learning Objectives:  As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify at least two characteristics of individuals who may use eye gaze to access an AAC device and two contraindications
  2. Describe three options for making selection with eye gaze
  3. State at least four best practices for getting started with eye gaze

Presenter Bio and Disclosures

Kristin Whitfield, MA, CCC-SLP is the Clinical Education Specialist for Control Bionics. She has worked as a speech-language pathologist in multiple different settings, specializing in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) for most of her career. Kristin has presented on various AAC topics at local, national, international, and online conferences/workshops. Her desire is to help others love AAC, and the people who use it, as much as she does.

Participant Information

Course Format:  Eye Gaze 101:  Getting Started is a self-study, recorded webinar available for viewing after completing a brief registration form.

Target Audience: This session is designed for speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, family members, caregivers, educators, and anyone interested in learning about AAC!

Completion Requirements:  In order to receive a certificate of completion or ASHA CEUs, participants must:

    • View the recorded course.  Partial credit for attending less than the whole class is not allowed.
    • Pass an online exam with 80% accuracy or greater.  Exams are multiple choice with 10 or fewer questions and can be taken as many times as needed to pass.
    • Complete an online course evaluation.

Timeline:  Access to the course, exam, and course evaluation will be provided after registering for this recorded course. Participants have until the end of the month in which they registered to complete the course, exam, and evaluation after registration.  Quiz results and course evaluation responses will be checked within 3 days of the end of each month.  For participants who meet completion requirements during the prior month, ASHA reporting and/or certificates of completion will be sent within 15 days.
