[Recorded Webinar] Scanning 101: Getting Started

July 8, 2022

Check out our most recent recorded webinar featuring a Control Bionics employee, Kristin Whitfield, MA, CCC-SLP. Throughout this session, Kristin speaks to the importance of scanning for those who cannot communicate on their own. In addition to a demonstration of scanning, this webinar features several topics such as defining access methods for AAC, the fundamentals of scanning, and several case studies of individuals with varying communication challenges.

COURSE INFORMATION

Description:  Scanning is an important access method for Augmentative and Alternative Communication.  Often viewed as a last resort, scanning can feel daunting to understand and teach.  This course is designed to cover the basics about scanning, including the types of scanning, making selections in scanning (e.g., switches), and characteristics of individuals who use scanning for communication.  A second session, Scanning 102, will dive into how to facilitate accurate, purposeful switch use and teach scanning for communication!

Learning Objectives:  As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to:

  1. Identify three broad types of scanning
  2. Describe three parts of the ideal movement used to activate a switch to access a communication device
  3. Name three characteristics of individuals who use scanning to communicate
