Auditory Scanning: Welcome to The Block
Description: Join us for an in-depth discussion of auditory scanning and a new communication solution for auditory scanners! Together we will explore the fundamentals of auditory scanning, such as cognitive and physical demands and problems with repurposing visually based AAC layouts for auditory scanning. Next, we will introduce The Block, a page set designed specifically for auditory scanning. Through case examples and guided simulations, this session will highlight how The Block reduces working memory load, supports quick access to core language, and improves communication efficiency. Participants will gain practical strategies for evaluating candidacy, addressing scanning barriers, and implementing The Block to optimize success for auditory scanners.
Content Disclosure: In addition to discussing concepts fundamental to auditory scanning, this session will focus on The Block, a custom page set created in Grid 3 software. No other communication software or auditory scanning pages will be discussed in detail.

Learning Objectives: As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to:
- Identify three specific demands of auditory scanning related to linguistic skills, working memory, and environmental factors.
- Describe three limitations of traditional vocabulary layouts used with auditory scanners and explain how The Block page set addresses these barriers.
- Identify three practical strategies for teaching auditory pathways when implementing The Block in clinical and educational environments.

Presenter Bio and Disclosures
Jennifer Pucher, MS CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist with over 15 years of experience working at a private school in Edison, NJ where she specializes in working with children ages 3-21, who are multiply disabled and medically fragile. Her clinical focus includes augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and feeding challenges. Jennifer holds a Certificate in Assistive Technology from Stockton University. In addition to her work within the school setting, in the past, Jennifer served as an adjunct professor for Kean University. She also worked in New Jersey’s Early Intervention system for many years, providing family-centered support to infants and toddlers with communication delays. Jennifer co-created The Block, a custom page-set tailored to meet the unique needs of auditory scanners.

Megan McGrath, MA CCC-SLP, BSC-AAC, is a speech-language pathologist with over a decade of experience serving medically fragile, multiply disabled students ages 3 to 21 at a specialized school setting. The primary focus of her work is advancing access and autonomy for individuals with complex communication needs. She holds board certification in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) through the American Board of Augmentative and Alternative Communication and a Certificate in Assistive Technology from Stockton University. Megan is an adjunct faculty member at Kean University in New Jersey, where she has taught graduate AAC coursework for the past seven years. She is also the co-creator of The Block, a custom auditory scanning page set designed to reduce cognitive load and increase communication efficiency for auditory scanners.

Course Format: Auditory Scanning: Welcome to The Block is a self-study, recorded webinar available for viewing after completing a brief registration form.
Target Audience: This session is designed for speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, educators, assistive technology professionals, and others interested in accessing AAC!
Completion Requirements: In order to receive a certificate of completion or ASHA CEUs, participants must:
- Provide their ASHA number (for reporting to the ASHA CE Registry only).
- View the recorded course. Partial credit for attending less than the whole class is not allowed.
- Pass an online exam with 80% accuracy or greater. Exams are multiple choice with 10 or fewer questions and can be taken as many times as needed to pass.
- Complete an online course evaluation.
Timeline: Access to the course, exam, and course evaluation will be provided after registering for this recorded course. Participants have until the end of the month in which they registered to complete the course, exam, and evaluation after registration. Quiz results and course evaluation responses will be checked within 3 days of the end of each month. For participants who meet completion requirements during the prior month, ASHA reporting and/or certificates of completion will be sent within 15 days.
