The Missing Pieces of Eye Gaze Success: Eye Health
Description: Eye health is not discussed in common AAC literature, graduate school training, and professional development. However, during a recent clinical study Bridging Voice found that 20% of ALS clients to its non-profit organization benefited from the implementation of eye health intervention. This session explores the impact of eye health on the successful use of eye gaze access with speech generating devices. We will explore the frequently seen impacts of common medications, eyelid movements, hydration, and respiratory equipment on eye health and eye tracking. Addressing eye health is important to ensure both proactive protection of the eye as well as continued access to this important access method for those currently using eye gaze.
Learning Objectives: As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to:
- Identify target information during clinical review
- Identify functional signs and symptoms of eye health impact on eye gaze use.
- Identify strategies for functional treatment/compensation.

Presenter Bio and Disclosures
Trinity Deibert, MS, CCC-SLP Trinity is a speech language pathologist/AAC specialist and has over 24 years of experience supporting people with ALS, caregivers, and allied professionals through AAC. Her work focuses on education and hands-on support to help individuals and care teams succeed with communication technology throughout the ALS journey. Prior to Bridging Voice, Trinity developed a home health ALS/AAC program in Northwest Oregon.

Course Format: The Missing Pieces of Eye Gaze Success: Eye Health is a self-study, recorded webinar available for viewing after completing a brief registration form.
Target Audience: This session is designed for speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, assistive technology professionals, users, family members, and others interested in AAC solutions!
Completion Requirements: In order to receive a certificate of completion or ASHA CEUs, participants must:
- Provide their ASHA number, address, and email address (for reporting to the ASHA CE Registry only).
- View the recorded course. Partial credit for attending less than the whole class is not allowed.
- Pass an online exam with 80% accuracy or greater. Exams are multiple choice with 10 or fewer questions and can be taken as many times as needed to pass.
- Complete an online course evaluation.
Timeline: Access to the course, exam, and course evaluation will be provided after registering for this recorded course. Participants have until the end of the month in which they registered to complete the course, exam, and evaluation after registration. Quiz results and course evaluation responses will be checked within 3 days of the end of each month. For participants who meet completion requirements during the prior month, ASHA reporting and/or certificates of completion will be sent within 15 days.
