Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Awareness Month

September 1, 2022

September is National Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Awareness Month. With over 17,000 new spinal cord injuries taking place every year in the U.S., there is a significant need to call attention to the severity of spinal cord injuries and for continued research to aid in finding a cure.

To sustain an SCI is extremely traumatic for the individual, and it also takes a toll on their family, friends, and community. This month-long campaign provides an opportunity to recognize all the important facts about life with a spinal cord injury and offer support for those affected by a SCI.

What is Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)?

A SCI is when the spinal cord sustains an injury that temporarily or permanently affects its normal motor, sensory, or automatic function. The spinal cord is the largest nerve in the body and serves as the main pathway for messages sent from the brain to the rest of the body. So, an injury to the spinal cord is oftentimes accompanied by extensive neurologic deficits and a disability. The impact of a SCI varies and is unique to each individual, but is overall determined by the severity and location of the injury on the spinal cord.

You Can Help Raise Awareness!

Everyone has the power to raise awareness for this life-altering injury each year in September, even those who have not been personally affected by it! Contributing to the cause in ways such as wearing a SCI awareness ribbon, raising funds for research and awareness efforts, hosting a community event, educating people, and creating a list of resources for SCI survivors and their families are all things that could make a tremendous difference in the fight against SCIs.
