Technical Foundations: Fine-Tuning Eye Tracking and iPadOS

Description: What happens when advanced technology meets a complex user journey? For some individuals, success depends on fine-tuning the interaction between a user’s eyes and their iPadOS device. This foundational session provides a technical deep dive into the integration of eye-tracking technology within the iPadOS ecosystem. Participants will learn the essential mechanics of hardware setup and the software configurations necessary for a reliable access method. In addition, the session focuses on customizing and utilizing native iPadOS accessibility tools—such as Hot Corners and Snap-to-Item—to create a robust digital bridge for AAC users. This class is a prerequisite for a longer session coming in September 2026!

Content Disclosure:  This session will discuss access to iPads using eye tracking.  Much of the information can be applied to iPadOS communication devices from any vendor.  Some information will be specific to the Hiru eye tracker from Irisbond and all case studies and clinical examples presented utilize the Oskol 2 hardware.  No other eye tracking products will be discussed during this course.

Learning Objectives: As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to:

    1. Configure iPadOS accessibility tools to enable eye gaze navigation in AAC and mainstream applications.
    2. Fine-tune eye tracking technology parameters to optimize the growth of emergent and independent user profiles.
    3. Identify appropriate calibration customization strategies based on user performance and access needs.

Course Format: Technical Foundations is a self-study, recorded webinar available for viewing after completing a brief registration form.

Target Audience: This session is designed for speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, assistive technology professionals, users, family  members, and others interested in eye gaze AAC solutions!

Completion Requirements:  In order to receive a certificate of completion or ASHA CEUs, participants must:

    • Provide their ASHA number, address, and email address (for reporting to the ASHA CE Registry only).
    • View the recorded course. Partial credit for attending less than the whole class is not allowed.
    • Pass an online exam with 80% accuracy or greater. Exams are multiple choice with 10 or fewer questions and can be taken as many times as needed to pass.
    • Complete an online course evaluation.

Timeline:  Access to the course, exam, and course evaluation will be provided after registering for this recorded course. Participants have until the end of the month in which they registered to complete the course, exam, and evaluation after registration.  Quiz results and course evaluation responses will be checked within 3 days of the end of each month.  For participants who meet completion requirements during the prior month, ASHA reporting and/or certificates of completion will be sent within 15 days.
