Customizing Eye Gaze After Eye Health Changes

Description: Many individuals with ALS who rely on eye gaze access for communication experience changes in their eye health due to changes in medication, respiratory status, blinking, and even extended use of eye gaze.  Without education on how to manage through these changes, individuals may find their ability to use eye gaze to be negatively impacted, resulting in loss of communication and even augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) abandonment.

In this session, we will review multiple customizations created by Bridging Voice that are designed to mitigate the impact of changes in eye health.  For example, we will share small changes to the keyboard across speech-generating device (SGD) platforms that can significantly increase accuracy and efficiency when typing novel messages.  All customizations have been implemented with clients with ALS and have had positive outcomes. In fact, recent research conducted by Bridging Voice has demonstrated functional, measurable success with these customizations, ensuring people with ALS maintain or regain eye gaze access to communication following changes related to eye health.

Learning Objectives: As a result of this activity, the participant will be able to:

    1. Identify the three stages of eye tracking in individuals with a progressive neurological condition
    2. State three common causes of dry eye resulting from both individual oculomotor changes and induced by medication as seen in ALS and other neurological conditions
    3. Identify three options for customization to improve eye gaze accuracy and communication efficiency following eye health changes

Presenter Bio and Disclosures

Trinity Deibert, MS, CCC-SLP, is a speech language pathologist/AAC specialist and has over 24 years of experience supporting people with ALS, caregivers, and allied professionals through AAC. Her work focuses on education and hands-on support to help individuals and care teams succeed with communication technology throughout the ALS journey. Prior to Bridging Voice, Trinity developed a home health ALS/AAC program in Northwest Oregon.

Course Format:This will be a live, online course presented via Microsoft Teams. Interaction will be encouraged and time for questions incorporated into the session. Target Audience: This session is designed for speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, assistive technology professionals, users, family  members, and others interested in AAC solutions!

Completion Requirements:  In order to receive a certificate of completion or ASHA CEUs, participants must:

    • Provide their ASHA number, address, and email address (for reporting to the ASHA CE Registry only).
    • Attend the full course from their own computer (not as part of a group). Login and logout times will be recorded automatically by the meeting software (Microsoft Teams).  Partial credit for attending less than the whole class is not allowed.
    • Pass an online exam with 80% accuracy or greater.  Exams are multiple choice with 10 or fewer questions and can be taken as many times as needed to pass.
    • Complete an online course evaluation.

Timeline:  Links for the exam and evaluation will be emailed to participants and must be completed within 7 days of receiving the email.  Certificates of attendance and ASHA CEU documentation will be sent/submitted within 15 days of completion.
